Ythan Fiddlers take a bow for reel-y great donation

We were invited to join the Ythan Fiddlers at their pre-Christmas meal recently to receive a reel-y great cash donation.

The fiddlers and accordionists are a group of enthusiastic musicians from Ellon and the surrounding area, whose main aim is to promote traditional Scottish music.

Ages range from eight to 80 and they keep local and Scottish music alive and encourage young musicians to play and entertain at events throughout the year.

The Ythan Fiddlers receive donations at these events and at the end of the year members decide on the charities they want to support.

And this year we were very grateful to be one of the beneficiaries, and committee member Gordon Robertson went along to receive the donation of £500 at the Buchan Hotel in Ellon.

“Friends is truly grateful for this generous gesture and we would like to thank this group of talented musicians,” said Gordon.

Two other charities also benefitted - North East Sensory Services and Cycling Without Age in Scotland, which is establishing a base in Ellon.

Friends of Roxburghe House Grampian was nominated by Carole Hawthorn in recognition of the help the family received from doctors, nurses and other staff and volunteers when her cousin was in the ward.

The cheque was presented by Lorraine Clark (Ythan Fiddlers president) with members and guests present.

The Ythan Fiddlers were founded in 1985 as a fiddle and accordion group dedicated to promoting traditional Scottish music. The group is led by musical director Trish Gill and regularly plays in concerts, ceilidhs and festivals in the North-east of Scotland as well as making trips abroad and throughout Scotland to promote its music.
