Speyside run in memory of mum Elaine

Next weekend Vikki Kane is lacing up her trail shoes to tackle the Dramathon, a gruelling 26-mile marathon along the Speyside Way.

Vikki is taking on this massive challenge in memory of her mum, Elaine Rose Jamieson, who passed away at Roxburghe House in August at the age of 68.

“Roxburghe House holds a very special place in my heart and my family’s lives,” said Vikki.

“The care, kindness and support given to people and their families during some of the most difficult times is something I will never forget.”

The race – which takes place on Saturday 17 October – follows a winding route through forest tracks, footpaths and rolling Scottish countryside, starting at the Glenfarclas distillery and finishing at the Glenfiddich distillery.

“My training is going well,” she said. “I’m focusing a lot on endurance and cardio to build my strength and hopefully get me through those 26 miles. I’ve recently completed the Inverness, Aberdeen and Banchory half marathons, and I’m currently training at the gym around five days a week.”

Vikki used to work for Mines Rescue, where they did a lot of confined space rescue cover at Glenfiddich, which is how she heard about the Dramathon. She took part last year but says it means so much more to her this year as she’s running it in memory of her mum.

“I’m not the greatest or fastest runner, but I absolutely love taking part in races and challenging myself. My mum would always come along to watch me at my races and sporting events, taking loads of photographs along the way, as she was a keen photographer,” said Vikki.

“Having her there, cheering me on and capturing all those moments, was something I always loved. So being able to do the Dramathon in her memory this year feels very special.”

Losing her mum has been devastating, but Vikki draws strength from the memory of her biggest cheerleader. She knows Elaine will be with her every step of the way across the hilly terrain and boggy paths of Speyside.

“It’s going to be tough, emotional and probably involve a fair few sore legs - but every mile will be for Mum,” said Vikki.

As a reward for crossing the finish line, runners are traditionally handed single malts corresponding to the distance covered.

So far, Vikki has already raised an incredible £525, smashing her initial £100 target. However, every extra pound helps the charity continue providing specialist palliative care and comfort to patients and their families when they need it most.
