Police rugby teams tackle fundraising match

Two police teams have raised thousands of pounds for Friends in a pre-season charity rugby match in memory of a much-missed colleague.

North Police Scotland played Police Scotland Thistles Rugby Club in the Jack Calvert Memorial Cup last month at Deeside Rugby in Banchory.

And their fundraising – including a raffle and auction - has raised a remarkable £5,500, which has been split between Friends of Roxburghe House Grampian and The Police Children's Charity.

Badenoch-born policeman Jack Calvert (pictured below) died of bowel cancer last year aged 32. He was a great Scottish rugby fan and a former Police Scotland North flanker. The match was played in his memory and to raise funds for the two charities.

The silent auction featured two tickets for the Scotland-England game in January and a signed Scotland shirt, and the raffle not only gave ticket holders the chance to win a four-ball at Banchory Golf Club or a two-night stay at the Crieff Hydro but a day’s fishing.

A spokesperson for the Police Scotland Thistles Rugby Club said: “It was a great day and we’re already looking forward to next year. A massive well done to the Grampian lads for organising the event.”

Friends chairman Barbara Manson said: “This is a generous and welcome donation from an event that obviously held great significance as the players remembered one of their own.

“We would like to thank everyone who took part in the match, the whole team involved in organising the event as well as everyone who donated to this tremendous final amount.”
