Oyne cyclist completes epic 4,000km trans-European adventure

Mark Young has completed an incredible 4,000km ultra-distance cycling adventure from Italy to the Arctic Circle, raising raising thousands of pounds on his way

The 59-year-old from Oyne set off from Roverto in Italy on Saturday 25 July and crossed the finish line at the Nordkapp, the northernmost point in Europe connected to the mainland by road, on Friday 7 August.

Cycling up to 12 hours a day through eight countries, Mark beat his original target by completing the grueling challenge in just 14 days. He has raised over £3,000 in support of Cara Baxter’s Legacy.

Beyond expectations

Speaking after reaching his final destination, Mark shared his gratitude for the overwhelming support he received along the way.

“The journey over the last 14 days has been beyond any expectations I had,” he said.

“It really feels like the end of the earth heading towards Nordkapp.

“I’d like to give a massive thanks to everyone who has followed my journey taken the time to sponsor me too. You have no idea how much the comments lifted my spirits throughout this trip.

“Finally, I could not have done this without the love and support of the love of my life, Lynne Craigmyle, who continues to support me no matter what!”

Mark took on the immense challenge to support Cara's Legacy, fundraising for Friends of Roxburghe House following the loss of Cara in January 2024 at just 42 years old.

After receiving a bowel cancer diagnosis in October 2023, Cara was admitted to Roxburghe House for palliative care when her condition deteriorated rapidly.

Mark said: “The care and attention she received, from everyone at Roxburghe, was second to none.”

The race

The NorthCape4000 is the most attended ultra-distance bikepacking event in the world, attracting riders from over 50 nations.

This year’s ninth annual event saw participants navigate a route north across Europe, through Italy, Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Norway.

The journey culminated at Nordkapp on the northern coast of Magerøya island. Lying within the Arctic Circle, it is the last edge of European land before the North Pole and the ultimate destination of the NorthCape4000.
