Katrina takes on Highland challenge for Roxburghe House

This spring, Katrina Anderson is swapping her usual routine for the rugged terrain of the Scottish Highlands as she takes on the Race to the Base Trail Half Marathon.

The 13.1 mile race takes place on 10 May and is widely regarded as one of the most demanding in Scotland, taking runners across forest trails and through deep mud and hills, finishing at the base of the Suilven mountain.

Katrina, an account executive at Aberdeen-based communications agency Fifth Ring, is raising funds for Friends of Roxburghe House Grampian.

This has included holding an Easter bake sale at work.

Her motivation is rooted in what she describes as the “truly invaluable” care and kindness provided at the specialist palliative care unit.

“The strength, resilience and courage shown every day by the patients, families and staff at Roxburghe House is truly inspiring,” said Katrina.

“The care provided there goes far beyond medical support. It offers comfort, dignity and compassion when it’s needed most. The staff and facilities are not only vital but genuinely wonderful.”

Katrina’s journey to the start line has been a challenge in itself. After being told she would likely never compete in weightlifting again due to a chronic health condition, she turned to running as a way to manage her mental health and prove that setbacks do not have to be the end of the road.

Despite describing herself as “not a runner”, she has spent months training in all weather conditions to prepare for the remote trails.

Beyond the physical race, Katrina and her fellow runner Sam are organising several smaller events, including a bake sale to boost their fundraising total.

“I’ve had the privilege of spending time with the incredible nurses, doctors, and volunteers, whose kindness and support left a lasting impression through their compassion and care,” Katrina said.

“As tough as this race will be, it’s nothing compared to the challenges faced by those cared for at Roxburghe House, and the loved ones beside them.”
