Mandy Urquhart
Voluntary Services Manager
Coffee Bar Team
Operating 7 days a week, the Coffee Bar provides a very welcome personal service to patients, visitors and staff at Roxburghe House. Situated in the main reception area, the coffee bar is a relaxing environment where people can enjoy their refreshments

Days: 7 days per week

Hours: 9.30am – 12 noon or 1.45 pm – 4pm

Comments: Two people may share this activity if preferred
Flower Team
Volunteers are always required to ensure the patients' own flowers are kept clean and fresh for their enjoyment. Team members are also asked to maintain arrangements in public areas such as our Chapel, reception and in our day rooms. Please do not be put off by feeling you have no ‘artistic’ talents - no flower arranging experience is necessarily required as we have team members we can call upon when necessary. What is important is that this unique service is so vital in maintaining patient’s floral gifts for their enjoyment; flowers are a popular gift in the Unit and without our volunteers we would not be able to accept them on the ward. This in a unique opportunity with patient and family interaction.

Days: The team aim to provide cover 7 days per week

Hours: Flexible to suit you. However we ask you to avoid working within the hours of 12.30 pm – 2.00 pm when our ward is closed.

Comments: Two people may share this activity if preferred
Ward Refreshments Team
Providing a refreshment trolley service to in-patients and assisting with the menu selection service if required. The ‘Tea Trolley’ provides a refreshment service on the ward appreciated by patients and their visitors. Again this is a unique opportunity with patient and visitor interaction. Having volunteers to carry out this service allows our valued staff to undertake other patient care duties.

Days: 7 days per week

Hours: Mornings: 9.20am – 11.00 am or Afternoons: 2.15pm – 3.30pm

Comments: The times indicated are approximate; some shifts have additional duties helping a volunteer colleague in another area e.g. stocking up vending machines, covering coffee bar or reception etc. Depending on patient requirements, some shifts can be shorter than the times indicated.

Please note: Training for this opportunity consists of 2-3 sessions during the day on weekdays, not weekends (students should consider this before applying)

This role in particular is suitable for those either working or studying during ‘office hours’ who wish to lend their support. After the hours of 6.00 pm entry to Roxburghe House is by a doorbell entry system. The garden is a vital part of Roxburghe House, enjoyed by patients, their visitors and the volunteers and staff supporting the Unit. The environment for which we care for patients has always been extremely important to us and continues to be so. We have recently extended our garden to include a woodland walk, a pond and many interesting areas of seating for privacy and contemplation. On occasion we have corporate or community groups in to help our small but dedicated volunteer team.

Days & Hours: Flexible to suit you. Our current team works on a Thursday morning from 9 am -12noon. However, the nature of the work may suit someone working on their own or as part of a team, hours to suit you, please discuss further with VSM.

Day Unit & Activity Helpers Team
The Day Unit aims to maintain and improve the quality of life for patients living in their own home. The service operates 2 days a week, currently Tuesday and Thursday. Volunteers can join in with the activities on a one to one or group basis. Team members also help serve refreshments.

People with special interests, craft or music talents are always welcomed by the Team on an ad hoc basis to help in the activity programme for either day unit or in patients. With this in mind, your commitment need not be ‘ongoing’ on a weekly basis. If you feel you have a particular skill or hobby you would wish to share that would be of interest to our patients, please contact the VSM in the first instance.

Days: Tuesday or Thursday

Hours: Shifts of 3 hours or 5 hours are available

Comments: For consistency and comfort for patients we ask that volunteers in this area can commit to attend on a weekly basis.
